today, but it portends a bigger fundamental shift that has just had to happen in the romney/ryan campaign. now, over and over and over again on this campaign, on issues big and small, the romney/ryan campaign before today has been able to use one particular technique to escape the consequences of having unpopular policy ideas or policy ideas they don't particularly want to defend. they do this same thing over and over again, and usually, it works for them. here's the pattern. here's the pattern they have established. here's mitt romney back in august telling scott pelly of "06 minutes" that he believes abortion should be allowed to protect a woman's health. seriously? mitt romney thinks abortion is okay if a woman's health is in danger? no, not really. his campaign later said, no, never mind what mitt romney just said. he does not believe abortion should be allowed to protect a woman's health. okay. then in september, here was mitt romney telling david gregory on "meet the press" that he's not going to repeal all of obama care. he says he will keep part of obama care. but th

are proving that governor mitt romney continues to gain momentum tonight. according to the latest gallup poll among likely voters, romney remains in the lead 50% to 47%. now, historically, no candidate with 50% in a major head-to-head poll this late in the race has lost the election. and when it comes down to the issues, according to a brand new associated press poll, there seems that there is no more gender gap. now, governor romney erased the president's lead over the key voting group women and they are now tied at 47% each. and among independents, governor romney is surging past president obama, according to a brand new abc "the washington post" poll, the governor is 19 points ahead of the president. that's 57 to 38%. and when it comes to who is better equipped to handle the economy, that same poll reveals that more voters believe that governor romney is and that's 52% to 43%. now, on to the all important swing states. and, according to the latest according to the latest fox news poll in virginia governor romney is leading by two points that's 47 to 45 percent. now the growing surge in nan

the president did a lot better and probably won the debate. i think romney kind of laid out the red carpet for him to hone in on romney's weaknesses for some reason. romney was kind of weak last night, especially on libya. mark halperin, what do you think? >> i think the president won for two reasons mostly. one is libya. an issue the republicans thought they'd have an advantage on and instead romney gave an incredibly weak answer and the president gave a strong one. i think potentially taking the issue off the table the rest of the way including the national security debate. and romney loses as a politician when his opponents get inside his head on being rich and supporting policies which would seem to favor the rich. i thought the president did it all night. and romney showed it. the guy from denver was largely not there. >> joe, what stood out to you? >> well, the first 20 minutes of the poll, what stood out to me was the fact that this was a format, like we said yesterday, that really didn't play to mitt romney's strength. >> yeah. >> he came on way too strong. one thing that all chall
